A Servant's Chapter

by Tim LaVere

A Servant's Chapter comes directly from the heart of one of God's servants. As an author and associate pastor, Tim shares some wonderful insight about the joy of serving.

Someone once said, “By our stories we are known.” I believe that’s true. Jesus Christ was a wonderful storyteller. His parables allowed his followers see the truth in his teachings. His stories painted a picture that pointed the way to hope. Our Savior’s methods are still relevant today.

My story is one of God’s amazing love and redemption. I accepted Christ as a teenager, but sadly, I allowed circumstances to determine my future. My mom’s tragic death in an automobile accident when I was 19, my father’s alcoholism and my low self-esteem all seemed to conspire against me.

Then my beautiful little boy was diagnosed with autism and epilepsy. My marriage was falling apart, and I was in deep depression. Rather than turning to God, I tried to find my happiness in fast-food restaurants and doughnut boxes. When I finally reached rock bottom, I weighed nearly 300 pounds, and was suffering from bronchitis, asthma, and arthritis.

Thank God for a praying wife. She prayed me into the doors of my local church, where God began the healing process. Today, I’m the Associate Pastor of that same church, West Branch Assembly in West Branch, Michigan. I’ve dropped 135 pounds, my sicknesses are healed, and I had the pleasure of leading my father to Jesus Christ two days before he unexpectedly suffered a fatal heart attack. God has worked it all for his glory.

I’m the author of a book on servanthood, “Picking Up Stones” which is available at amazon.com, or barnesandnoble.com. I’ve been a radio broadcaster for nearly 24 years, and have been recognized by the Associated Press, Radio Television News Directors Association, ARC, and Michigan Association of Broadcasters for excellence in news writing and public service. My wife Pam and I have one son, Zachary.
