Attacking Anxiety and Depression ... You CAN Win the Battle

Attacking anxiety and depression is no different than attacking any other obstacle in your life that's preventing you from being what God has called you to be. But, because you move toward what you think about, this battle can appear larger because it always seems to be lurking just under the surface.

And, of course, attacking anxiety and depression must be faced from many different angles, up to and including medication, counseling, and behavior modification.

However, as a Christian, having the right focus can make a huge difference in this battle.

I recently read a book called "Facing Your Giants" by Max Lucado. This book is the story of David. Do you remember him? The guy in the Bible that slayed Goliath with the sling and a couple of stones?

Can't you just see this story unfolding? Here's this little guy looking up at this other guy that probably could be mistaken for a building. Talk about attacking anxiety and depression.....

Now, think about it. Running away would certainly seem like a reasonable plan. Heck, I would've considered hiding as another viable option....I guess that's why this isn't the story of Karen and Goliath.....

David was very focused on God. All the time. The circumstances of life never deterred him from believing. Right before David ran out to face the giant, before he did anything in his own strength, he began praising God. He didn't talk about his limitations, but what God had already done and continued to do in his life.

The Bible says that God is no respecter of persons. So could it be that God will do for you, what he did for David? What a concept......

Attacking anxiety and depression for you may be the same as attacking Goliath was for David. The giant certainly looks big. But God is bigger than any giant ever will be. And all you need are the right stones.

Here are some stones from the Amplified Bible that you can use in your battle. Remember to pray them out loud every day.

Matthew 6:34: So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble.

Phillipians 4:6-7: Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition, (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.

And God's peace (shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace) which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 40:1-3: I waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord; and he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up out of a horrible pit (a pit of tumult and of destruction), out of the miry clay (froth and slime), and set my feet upon a rock, steadying my steps and establishing my goings.

And He has put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many shall see and fear (revere and worship) and put their trust and confident reliance in the Lord.

And of course, here is a "Print & Pray" prayer for attacking anxiety and depression:

Heavenly Father,

You are such an amazing and awesome God. I come before You with a grateful heart for all the blessings You've poured into my life.

Right now, God, I'm really struggling. My emotions feel broken. I'm feeling anxious and depressed. Please reach down Your healing hand to touch my hurting soul. I believe with all my heart that You are my healer. Your word says that You are no respecter of persons. God, please help me as you helped David.

I'm putting my faith and trust in You, God. I know that I'll be feeling better starting today. I just thank You Lord for letting me come to You. And I thank You for loving me enough to take care of me.

I love You Lord.

I ask all things in the precious name of your Son, Jesus.

AMEN!
