Your Attitude in the Workplace ... Does it Matter?

The Difference Maker

by John Maxwell

Karen's Book Review

Your attitude in the workplace can mean the difference between success and failure, all other things being equal. That's according to John Maxwell, author of "The Difference Maker". But that being said, there are some things your attitude CAN'T do. Here's a list of those:

  • Your Attitude can't replace competence. Even when a person has a great attitude, incompetence can be a huge distraction to other people in the organization because they have to spend a lot of extra time trying to help you become competent.

  • Your attitude can't replace experience. I love what the author says about this. "Experience is often a hard teacher because the test is given first and the lessons come afterward. Ouch, does that hit home or what?

  • Your attitude can't change the facts. Your physical characteristics or who your parents are can't be changed. If your current goals include trying to change things that can't be changed, it doesn't matter how good your attitude is.

  • Your attitude in the workplace can't substitute for personal growth. Continuing to learn and grow are essential to you personally and to your growth in any organization.

  • Your attitude will not stay good automatically. Filling yourself up with good, positive stuff on a regular basis is key to staying on the right track. Making the decision every day to be positive is absolutely necessary.

I found this list interesting because it's the first time I've seen anybody refute the claim that "attitude is everything". John Maxwell insists that attitude isn't everything but it is certainly something. He contends that your attitude in the workplace is vital to your success, but he also talks about things that can hurt your attiude and provides specific help to overcome fear, deal with change, and manage problems.

    This is a GREAT read.
