Determining your own belief in Christianity usually comes when both your heart and soul are open to the truth. But just because you see the truth doesn't mean you don't have a lot of unanswered questions too.
Donald Miller, the author of "Blue Like Jazz", isn't afraid to confront some of the really tough questions about his faith, his life, and his belief in Christianity. Although I don't necessarily subscribe to all his conclusions and philosophies, I think his way of connecting his real life experiences with his faith questions helped him find some of the answers we all so desperately seek.
Sometimes I think people confuse relationship with religion. Donald Miller is very clear that his search is for a relationship with God. Although it's possible to find relationship through religion, it is certainly not the only way, and in many cases, it may not be the best way. In fact, in some cases, belief in religion replaces a real relationship out of some kind of obligation or feelings of guilt and in the process, relationship gets replaced by a process of "going through the motions".
This book teaches you to seek a relationship with God first, and then the particular method you choose to worship or "religion" while nurturing that relationship, will fall into place. It is only when you make sure that the motions are done with purpose and intention, that you can deepen the relationship.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for answers, especially college kids who are trying to decide exactly what they believe.
