Elder Care Help ... A Christian View
by Vanessa Barnes
Providing elder care help is a topic of that is very dear to my heart.Still living in the same community I grew up in, my roots to family run deep; very deep. Growing up next door to my paternal grandparents made for a very special childhood. We were blessed to speak with them pretty much everyday they were alive. We were taught to always be there for one another.
On the other side of my childhood home lived my dad's only brother. Next to him was one of their sisters, and across the street lived another sister. My relationship with first cousins was more of one with sisters and brothers. I cannot imagine living any other way. So when my mother fell ill at seventy years old in 1998, I had no choice to be at her side; a choice I never once regretted. Two weeks before I was laid off from my job, I knew God had called me not to seek employment elsewhere. He made it clear; that season of my life was going to be defined by serving the needs of my parents. It would be our faith in His promise to never leave us alone that proved to be our saving grace.
My husband and I knew our infant business had not grown enough to sustain us financially, but if we were to be obedient, then God would see to our needs. He did not disappoint. What unfolded from that point on was nothing short of a compilation of many miracles. For years, seeing to my mother's every need and providing elder care help was my God ordained purpose in life. It meant keeping the faith. In light of that experience, my eyes were opened to many spiritual lessons of purpose, seasons and destiny. As we, to this day, still love and cherish each day with my dad, I have come to see life as a continuous lesson of God's faithfulness. I have learned to allow His word to penetrate the core of who I am. As only He can, He taught me that in service to my parents and grandparents, I witnessed the truer meaning of Christian relationships.
