An Employee Development Plan You Don't Expect.....Is Your Company "Worthy of Commitment?"

An employee development plan...yup, it's one of those things managers talk about, think about, and perhaps even put to paper. But what is the purpose? What do we expect these employees to develop into? And who does it benefit?

In my many years of work in management, I've spent a lot of time with people from all walks of life and in many different financial positions. I've dealt with highly skilled, highly paid professionals and I've dealt with entry level, minimum wage workers. And even though people have different goals, different attitudes, and different outlooks on life, I found that no matter what they earn and no matter what their specialty is, they all want to feel like what they do is important.

As one of the tasks for a start-up company, I facilitated a positive image seminar. During the course of the sessions, several people came to me asking why the company would take the time to try to build the people. They were genuinely surprised that anyone would think they were valuable enough as people and as organizational assets to do this for them. One of them even told me, that never, at any place they'd worked before, had anyone said they were important.

How can that be possible? How can we, as supervisors and managers, not know how important individual people are in building an organization? How can it not be a top priority every day?

The best employee development plan is one where employees feel so great about what's happening, that they consider the organization WORTHY OF COMMITMENT. And you know it's working because you can literally talk to anyone in the organization and they tell you without hesitation that NO ONE does it better than they do.

And what do you suppose happens when you ask them for input or ideas about making the company better? These same individuals who are struggling financially and are struggling in so many areas of their lives open their minds and ideas come pouring out because after all, it's just what they do.....help build this company. It is just who they are......important pieces of the puzzle. The company they work for is a part of them and in their minds it has become WORTHY OF COMMITMENT.

This concept is no different than what Christ preaches. I believe His version of an employee development plan is to live by Christian priorities, and put them in action. Finding value in every person is exactly what God wants as we live out our faith.

Can I Work There Too?

The employee development plan that puts the right bricks and mortar in place as the foundation of the organization is the one that will ultimately win. It continually builds people from the very first day. And as those people begin to feel their worth, they walk around thinking they can accomplish anything. They walk around thinking that NO ONE does it better than they do.

When I think about the different ways to build loyalty in people, the different ways to build employees into contributing, productive assets in an organization, there is one thing that stands out more than any other. It is convincing them of their personal and organizational worth.

What a concept. Can you imagine what it would be like to work for an organization whose employee development plan was a key part of its ongoing effort to become an organization worthy of commitment? Think of the possibilities....
