Family Member in Distress

My sister is going through hard times with a husband that's very disrespectful, there's no money in the bank, bills haven't been paid and child can't go to school because there's no money for daycare. She doesn't like to tell me about it because she knows I'm going to tell her what she doesn't want here.

This has been going on for a while and it's getting worse. She told my other sister that she doesn't know what to do and she has been sad and quiet lately. Tonight she questioned her husband and he told her to stay in her place. He feels like he's the man and he does what he wants and she shouldn't dare question him.

We were born and raised here in America and he is from Haiti. There is a big culture difference. I know prayer works and I've been looking for a scripture in the bible to pray that GOD delivers her out of this situation. What bible verses do think I can relate to this situation?

something you don't want to hear....

Recommend to your sister the book "Five Love Languages".
If your sister is a believer, she needs to put her energy into praying for her husband, uplifting him with kind and gentle words of encouragement, and being quiet and patient amidst the storm. (yes, this was not what any wife or mother wants to hear). An obedient and submissive wife obeys her husband, serves him, and PRAYS for him. Nagging him or questioning him over and over about his responsibilities is not necessary- He knows (and if not, he's learning very quickly) what needs to be done to keep his household and family in order. He IS the man of the house, and if things are failing, as you say, she needs to put her trust solely in the Lords' ability to help him see those things and make the necessary changes.
As for your concern over her well-being, just listen to what she has to say. Unless she is asking for your advice, what she really needs is just a sounding board; someone she can voice her problems to (this usually helps to make the situation more real when people can hear themselves say it). There is no need for you to speak your opinion. If you prefer not to be involved, don't be. They are not your problems to deal with. In any case, your sister needs to look to the Lord to be her source of strength and provision.
I'm sure she is blessed and appreciates the loving sister you are and knows she can go to you for help.

2 Cor. 4:6-9 NIV

"Let light shine out of darkess... all-surpassing power is from God... crushed... but not in despair... struck down, but not destroyed."

I was looking for another verse, but opened to this one so I believe it is for you. Praying scripture is like a mighty sword. "Take... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God," (Eph.6:17)for it is designed to defeat the enemy's plan and rescue lives. cg

Scriptures

This is a VERY difficult situation for all of you. No matter what happens, somebody is going to get hurt. And, of course, it's always more complicated because there are kids involved.

It is great that you recognize prayer as your first and best choice of responses. It is always the best idea.

There are lots of great scriptures, but there is one that is my all time favorite: Romans 8:28

"All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose."

Here's how I would use this in a prayer for my sister if I were praying:

Father, thank You for Your mighty and awesome power in our lives. I know You see my sister's situation. I know this isn't Your will for her, Lord. But I also trust You. Your word says that all things work together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose.

Lord, please reach down Your hand and intervene in this situation. Make something strong and good come from it. Turn their marriage into a model Christian marriage.

Surround my sister and her husband with strong Christians who can be heard through all the noise. Tug at my sister's husband's heart. Bring someone into his life that he'll listen to.

Father, I thank You for surrounding my sister with Your love, Your comfort, and Your peace. In Jesus name I ask all things. AMEN.

The only other thing I will tell you is that it is a really BAD idea to preach to your sister. Even though you feel like there is so much great stuff in the Word that could help her sort it all out, resist the urge!

When you're in the middle of a crisis in your life, the last thing you want is somebody preaching to you. You'd rather hit them over the head with the Bible rather than read it, you know?

It is far better to be a loving sister who listens without judgment, and without attacking your sister's husband.

I know....it will probably be the hardest thing you've ever done, but your sister already knows her husband has problems, AND she already knows SHE has problems too.

We will all be praying for your sister and her husband.

Blessings,

Karen
