Hearing God

by Corne' Botha
(South Africa)

Could you please help me with the following question. My wife insists that God speaks to her through thunder and lightning. Whenever it appears she starts asking God questions and is convinced that she gets a yes or a no by doing this. When I say to her he speaks through the Word, prayer, Holy Spirit she agrees, but says that this is the way God speaks to her. Her motivation for saying this is the many references about clouds, thunder etc. which we read about especially in the Old Testament. I totally disagree with her on this. What is you opinion ? Thanks

Storms, lightening and clouds

Hi, I'm also in South Africa. How about gently pointing out all the references to the other ways God speaks to His people? There are so many in the Bible. If the answers your wife gets from listening to the clouds etc. are in line with scripture, don't knock it. But they MUST be in line with scripture to qualify as God's voice.

Hearing or not hearing
by: Karen

Hi Corne',

Wow, I don't think I've ever been asked this kind of question before.

There is no doubt that God can use anything He chooses to speak to people. He's not limited in any way. Does He speak to your wife? I don't know if anybody can say yes or no to that.

If your wife has an ongoing relationship with God and the "answers" she supposedly gets line up with God's Word and His will, then who is to say it isn't God?

However, if those supposed answers lead her away from His Word or lead her to do things that are obviously wrong, then there is no way it is God.

That's about the only guideline I can give you.

Blessings,

Karen
