How do I accept my Stepson's decision?

by Karen
(Elmendorf, TX, USA)

Hi,

My name is Karen. I have a stepson who has not be a model human being. He has been arrogant, self centered, manipulative and abusive. He has committed crimes of theft and sexual assault.

My husband has just informed me that his son, who I'll call Joe, has decided to train as an assistant chaplain for the Army. I can't help but believe that this is another of his self serving schemes.

How do I accept that maybe he has changed and the Lord has touched his life when I know how he still is? I hear it everytime we talk to him.

It is what it is
by: Karen

Hi Karen,

It sounds like a real battle in your life, that's for sure.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about your stepson's behavior. He is going to have to learn some very hard life lessons.

If he is joining the army, asst chaplain or not, he is going to have to abide by some very strict conduct rules. And those rules apply to everybody.

So perhaps joining the military will give him an opportunity for some of those life lessons.

You don't have to believe or not believe him. When he gets in there, the proof will be in the pudding.

I will say, though, it would definitely be in your best interest not to bad mouth your stepson to your husband. Nothing good can come from it. Just support your husband and watch what happens AFTER he's in the military.

Blessings,

Karen
