Aging is a natural occurrence and knowing the limits of what we can and cannot do in terms of elder care will undoubtedly keep us on a positive track.
In this case, preparation trumps surprise. After having cared for my mother for nine years and now my father for five and going, I have learned as much about my faith as I have about my will and personality. Typically health issues cannot be predicted, which makes it vital that areas which can be planned for be done.
God said He would never leave us alone and He hasn’t; we must learn to depend upon this promise so that our parents can depend upon us.
When our children are young we naturally look forward to the future by planning steps to ease the growing pains. Equally, we should give thoughts to caring for our parents if or when the eventualities arise.
Here a few things to consider before your need will arises:
•Plan for the possibility of a change of residence. Visit local nursing homes and assisted living facilities; learn their policies, costs and criteria for residence.
•Search the Internet for local, state and federal websites for advocacy groups dealing with elder care issues.
•Call your insurance representative and get a clear understanding of policy coverage for short and long term care. Check to see if policy covers any prescriptions.
•Have the elder agree to and sign while they are still able, a Statutory Durable Power of Attorney (In Texas this is needed, not sure about other states) which enables designee to perform banking and legal functions on their behalf.
•When hospitalized, seek a Medical Power of Attorney from hospital social worker.
•Contact Medicare to understand your specific benefits if it pertains.
•Contact Social Security for questions concerning any changes in check deposits if it pertains.
•Visit The National Council on Aging for a wealth of information.
This practical and spiritual pursuit is the basic principle for effectively planning a secure and peaceful environment for those we love the most. Providing for elder family members is according to Scripture, the honorable thing to do. When we love and provide for our parents we in essence love God.
Taking time now to do the research before it becomes urgent can drastically reduce the stress level and help ease into this difficult transitional part of life.
Make planning a quality time by doing it with your parents, involving them as much as possible. Help maintain their dignity by communicating and listening to their wishes and ideas. Don’t hesitate to seek outside assistance and most of all, try to do what Jesus would have you do.
