Living with Depression

by Sara
(Portland, OR)

I've lived with depression a large part of my life. I come from an abusive family background, and instead of dealing with it I just shoved it all inside.

Now I find myself feeling alone and depressed constantly. I read your articles and even though they sound good, it's still hard to get started. I've been this way for so long that I can't imagine feeling good anymore.

What do you do if you're too depressed to even start?

A KINDRED SPIRIT
by: Shirley Peter

Hi Sara,
I emphasize with you as I also have suffered with depression a great share of my life. Not until I went for help from my family Doctor. But a great share of my improvement has come from turning things over to God.

I needed the medication in order to get me started as you said, as I just had lost hope of ever feeling good but the medicine did give me relief so I could work on my problems.

I urge you to seek help with your family physician and I wish the best for you. Tell them what you told us and see if there is not some help out there for you. I believe that there is, and with God all things are possible. God bless.

Depression Help
by: Karen

Hi Sara,

Living with depression is tough. There's so much more to it than simply feeling sad all the time.

I think your first step is to find a Christian counselor/physician who will start with your physical health and move into your mental health. Sometimes there are physical issues that cause depression, and ruling those out is always a good idea.

Your doctor may prescribe medication so you can feel good enough to make necessary changes in your life.

Counseling and prayer are always good tools to help depression.

Unfortunately, there is no one right answer that fits every person. Sometimes one thing works for one person and another thing works for another person.

But I will say that prayer works for all.

Sara, start with your doctor and see where that takes you. In the meantime, I will add your name to my prayer list.

Blessings,

Karen
