The True Meaning of Respect

Under Cover

by John Bevere

Karen's Book Review

What is the true meaning of respect? People today are definitely missing the boat, or so it seems. Somewhere along the way we seem to have lowered the value of showing respect, especially respect for authority.

I just finished a new book by John Revere called, "Under Cover". I must be honest and say that this book left me unsettled. That is, it left me feeling convicted to change several of my attitudes.

It's not easy to read a book that makes you feel like you need to make changes in your life, even when you know the changes will help you. It's hard to think that what you've been doing and thinking for a long time was probably not in your own best interest and in some cases, was most likely harmful.

The title of Chapter 8 in this book is "Does God Know Who is in Charge?" It talks about people who are in authority but who are not so likable for many reasons. The author uses Romans 13:1-2 as a basis for his discussion.

Let every soul by subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.

Now, if you're like me, after reading that scripture at least one of these thoughts comes into your head.

"Yeah, but do you know who's in charge of our city or state?"

"Yeah, but have you ever worked with this person who runs the company I work for?"

"Yeah, but you weren't raised by the parents I had."

"Yeah, but do you know who's running for office and wants to represent me?"

The true definition of respect is showing that you value the office or position, and by extension, you show deference to the person.

If God appointed our leaders and God is in charge of all this stuff, then who are we to act like we know better?

Is that a tough pill to swallow or what?

The author goes on to say that this concept not only applies to our civic leaders, but any delegated authority. Showing respect for them is showing respect for God...could this be the true meaning of respect??

So the question then becomes...

When was the last time you spoke poorly of your boss? When was the last time you said something unkind about your pastor? When was the last time you honored your parents, just because they're your parents?

Like I said, this book uncovered lots of areas in my own life that need changing. It means God has lots of work to do with me.

But would I recommend this book? ABSOLUTELY YES. It was worth the pain to get the gain.
