My Husband is an alcoholic

by Nicole Abbattista
(Sarasota, Florida USA)

I am a christian and my husband is not, he believes that there is a god but wants nothing to do with the christian life style. so I pray for him. Lately I have been finding him at the bar after work spending our bill money on his alcohol problem. This is causing alot of problems for me I dont like the fact that he's at the bar for 7hrs and has spent all our money. I feel he is married and should not be at the bar, I tell him he's not single anymore and he should be home with me. Help if you can?
Thank you Nicole

Nicole, you are caught in a tough spot. If there is one thing that is clear, it is impossible to control another person's behavior. This is particularly true when that person is under the influence of an addiction.

Alcohol is such a subtle destroyer of marriages. It is one addiction that is socially acceptable at the beginning, so it sneaks up on lots of people.

My advice to you is to find a good Al Anon group and learn what you need to do in order to not get caught up in his behavior. Al Anon is a wonderful organization, but as in all organizations, not all groups are the same. Try out several groups and find one that connects with you.

Blessings to you!
