Old/New Covenant

Hi there!!
I've been a bit confused as to, too what point do we follow the old covenant? Keeping Sundays holy, tithing, celebrating feasts - just all the old testament 'rules'??? What is the new covenant?? Believing in Jesus and loving one another?? Or is there more??

The Rules and Regulations
by: Karen

This is a question whose answer depends on your "religious affiliation". I say that because there are different interpretations and that seems to be the case with many different issues of religious doctrine.

If you are asking my opinion based on my beliefs, then here it is.

The Old Covenant was established between God and Abraham. It was largely a promise that God would take care of the people if they did what God said to do.

There were lots of rules and regulations that were clearly spelled out. And if you read through the Old Testament, you'll find lots of examples where the people would break the rules and God would lift His hand of protection.

The Old Covenant was largely based on the works of the people and what they did or didn't do to gain God's protection and blessing.

Then along came Jesus, who gave us a new covenant. This covenant was based on an entirely different understanding. It's called grace.

The new covenant is based on accepting that none of your works will ever gain God's love or blessing. It says that accepting Christ as your personal savior, that He died for you and for all your sins as a way to atone, is your ticket to eternal life. So when you make this decision, you receive God's gift of His son through His grace.

It takes the focus off people and their works and puts it on the love of God through His Son. It doesn't mean that you don't still do good works, but those works are done out of gratitude for all that God has given you. They're not to gain points on a scorecard somewhere.

So how does the tithing and fasting all come into play?

I believe when you have an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ, out of that love comes your desire to demonstrate your faith.

Tithing is an act that puts God first in one of the most important areas of life, according to this world. When you tithe, you outwardly express what you inwardly believe, that God is first in all things, including your money.

God honors those actions. He loves to see Christians live like they actually believe what they say.

Fasting is a way to show God that you are willing to put Him first over your feelings and emotions. It's not easy to fast. It's hard, in fact. But when you fast, you're showing your desire to come closer to Christ.

Fasting is a way to focus more on God and less on what our mind, will, and emotions want to be focused on. It shows God our seriousness about seeking His will, even in a world that is overwhelming full of distractions.

So yes, there are things from the Old Testament that are still relevant. It's just that you're doing them out of gratitude, love, and a true desire to put God first in every area of your life.

Blessings,

Karen
