What Does Personal Integrity Look Like?
Do you remember the days when most people had personal integrity? I suspect those days truly were a long time ago. Remember when your word was your bond? Or perhaps.....your word has NEVER been your bond? Before the days of a zillion lawyers and overcrowded courts, people entered into agreements with a simple handshake. Both parties were comfortable because the spoken word was the agreement. People just didn't consider breaking their word because their personal integrity was that important. Can't you just imagine a world like that? People today say all kinds of things without considering the consequences. Have you ever made a commitment to someone, and later decided it was too inconvenient or too much hassle to follow through? Have you ever said something to somebody knowing full well it would never happen? Statements like, "We need to get together for lunch soon", or "We really need to have you guys over for dinner." What about having integrity in your business or workplace? How many times have you said whatever a customer wanted to hear just so they would go away and stop bugging you?
So......what is integrity.....exactly?Here's what Webster says: 1 : firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values : INCORRUPTIBILITY 2 : an unimpaired condition : SOUNDNESS 3 : the quality or state of being complete or undivided : COMPLETENESS synonym: see HONESTY I recently read a book called, "Talent is Never Enough" by John Maxwell.
What a great book about all the right stuff in your life that supports the talent God gave you. All the supporting traits in this book all lead to one thing.....personal integrity. Caring enough to protect and develop your talent means you place maintaining your personal integrity as your highest priority. The truth is that God honors that commitment. Doing what's right when nobody else is watching is NOT an easy thing. God knows it isn't easy. Here's what His Word says about it: Proverbs 19:1: Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is perverse in his speech and is a (self-confident) fool. (Taken from the Amplified Bible)
Here is a "Print & Pray" prayer to help you with your personal integrity:
Heavenly Father,I come to You because You are such a loving and amazing God. Even though You have millions of people to tend to, You're still willing to help me. Nothing is too hard for You God. I need your help as I'm trying really hard to maintain my personal integrity. I want to be the kind of person that everyone knows keeps their word. I want to be Your example of living a life without compromise. Please help me, Lord. Help me to take my commitments seriously. Help me say what I mean and mean what I say. And mostly, help me to ALWAYS do the right thing, even when nobody else is watching. I ask all things in Jesus' name. Amen!
