reading scripture

by sandra
(texas)

I long to have my husband open the Bible and read God's word, instead of turning on the TV all the time. He also makes sure he reads the newspaper every day. But never reads the Bible.
We are regular church attenders; & our pastor encourages the congregation weekly to read God's word.
I pray every day for my husband to have a hunger for God's word. He is not the spiritual leader of our home.

Response to "reading scripture"
by: Lee Baucom

Just a very brief history lesson: the printing press was invented in the early 15th century. Up until then, no Christians, other than the ministers, had Scriptures. It didn't matter since most couldn't read anyway. And yet, for 1400, Christians were faithful. In other words, reading Scripture is relatively new for normal folks.

I am not saying that reading Scripture is bad. I am saying there are many faithful Christians who don't read much Scripture, and still have a close relationship with God.

But let me take it one step further: each person must come to terms with his or her spiritual life. It is not possible to control another person's path. In fact, when someone tries to force another to do something, they often get the opposite effect.

Perhaps you could be supportive of your husband being the spiritual leader, rather than having the requirements for him to be that. And perhaps you could give him room to discover his own path to God.

Blessings to both of you.
