Because God's will for every Christian is to love your neighbor as yourself, it isn't enough just to pray for your neighbor's problems, if you also can be part of the solution. It's easy to look at all the poor and hungry in this world and even become indignant because nobody seems to be doing anything to help solve the problem. And yet, there are those who pass hungry people in their own town, on their own street and don't lift a finger to help. They simply wish they would go away. They are an inconvenience, a reminder that the need is great.
You can read all the scripture on tithing and giving, believe it's obsolete, and move on with your life as though it just can't possibly apply to you. But the truth is, if you plan to move forward with what God has planned for you, if you want God's best in your life, if you want God to use you, then you need to start by believing the scripture on tithing DOES apply to you and putting it into action means finding ways to be a blessing to the people around you, especially if it involves giving. Having Christian priorities means you understand that you can't have God's blessings without the responsibilities. The bottom line is that it all ties together. Committing to "being a true Christian" means you're willing to do what God is leading you to do in every part of your life...even your finances.
Here's some real help in managing your Christian finances. Once you make the commitment to get your finances in order, God will arrive on the scene!
Here is some scripture on tithing that will give you a place to start in your understanding in this important area. Please note that this is the ONLY place in the Bible where God says to test Him.
Malachi 3:8-10: Will a man rob or defraud God? Yet you rob and defraud Me. But you say, "In what way do we rob or defraud You?" You have withheld your tithes and offerings. You are cursed with the curse, for you are robbing Me, even this whole nation.
Bring all the tithes (the whole tenth of your income) into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and prove ME now by it, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
Luke 6:38: Give and (gifts) will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will they pour into (the pouch formed by) the bosom (of your robe and used as a bag.) For with the measure you deal out (with the measure you use when you confer benefits on others), it will be measured back to you.
II Corinthians 9:6-7: (Remember) this: he who sows sparingly and grudgingly will also reap sparingly and grudgingly, and he who sows generously (that blessings may come to someone) will also reap generously and with blessings.
Let each one (give) as he has made up his own mind and purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion, for God loves (He takes pleasure in, prizes above other things, and is unwilling to abandon or do without) a cheerful (joyful, "prompt to do it") giver (whose heart is in his giving).
In addition to the scripture on tithing above, here is a "Print and Pray" prayer you can use to help you get started in this important area.Print and Pray
God,
I've read all the scripture on tithing and You can see my finances. I haven't always made the best choices when it comes to money. But now I'd like to start giving to Your work because I want to take a step in the right direction.
I don't know where the money will come from Lord, You can see how burdened I am already. But I'm just going to trust you Lord, that if I start small, that You'll bless the seed I'm planting. I promise to work with You to turn my finances around by putting Your work first.
Thank You for giving me this chance to make the changes I need to make. Thank You for blessing me and my family.
I ask all things in Jesus' name.
AMEN!
