Should I leave?

by Sheila
(Ann Arbor, MI)

My husband and I have been married for 2 years. He's always been a flirt with other women, but recently it turned into an affair with a coworker.

I found out when she called his cell phone and I answered it. I was so shocked that I couldn't even think clearly.

It's been 3 days since I found out and now I think I want to leave this marriage. I feel betrayed and used. I'm thinking about going to stay with a friend until I can figure things out.

Is this the right thing to do?

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you whether you should leave or not. The Bible is clear that infidelity does give you permission to end a marriage. But the choice on whether to do this or not is up to you. So, Biblically thinking, you have permission, but you don't have to.

Affairs tear at the very fabric of a marriage, destroying trust in the relationship. However, the majority of couples where infidelity occurs do stay married.

Affairs are symptoms of other problems in the marriage, and this must be addressed before the marriage can occur.

You two definitely need to speak with your minister or a counselor to talk it through. If your husband refuses to address the issue, then there may be little you can do to recover.

Best wishes and blessings to you.
