So...Why Exactly Did God Make Woman?

by Ameerah Lewis
(Cincinnati, OH)

What in the world was God thinking when He decided to make women?

I'm not sure if you can relate, but I have spent countless hours of my life asking myself this question. What was the point? Wouldn't it have been easier to just make us all men?

All of mankind's recorded history reveals women who were treated like second class citizens, and, in many cases, even property. In fact, many of us around the world still are. When we hear the horrors of women who are being brutally circumcised or sold into sexual slavery, our hearts can not help but ache for them.

But as God stood over Adam that fateful day, and caused Him to fall into a deep sleep, was this the plan that was running through His mind?

Did He just need someone who would keep the house and cook the meals? Was He simply creating someone capable of baring the pains of childbirth and raising the kids?

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I have asked myself these questions, but early in my Christian walk I found myself so confused. I struggled to balance all of the things I had learned from the world about a woman's right to work and "self-fulfillment," with what I was reading in the Word of God.

But, eventually, I got smart. Instead of trying to answer these questions myself, I turned them over to my Heavenly Father. "Are women really nothing more than your afterthought?" And, finally, I got a real answer.

To a God who knows all things, there are absolutely no afterthoughts!

In fact, long before God looked into His son Adam's eyes, He knew there was going to be a serious problem.

Now the Lord God said,
It is not good (sufficient, satisfactory) that the man should be alone;

I will make him a helper meet
(suitable, adapted, complementary) for him.
-Genesis 2:18(AMP)

We have all probably heard that scripture over a hundred times. But, have you ever realized that this was the only time during the entire creation story that God stopped and said "It is NOT good."

Everything else was a reflection of His own perfection.

"And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, (and) the herb yielding seed...And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed... and God saw that it was good."(Genesis 1:11-12)

"And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night...and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:16-18)

And the history of creation continues. One by one, God called the majestic wonders of our world into being. Every thing had a place, and everything was in its place. And, as my friends and I used to say in the 90s, "it was all good!"

Suddenly, we read that there's trouble in paradise! What could possibly be the problem? "It is not good (sufficient, satisfactory)that the man should be alone." (Genesis 2:18)

But, thankfully, God was well prepared. You see, within the depths of man, God had hidden the strength and beauty of woman. She alone would be the answer to God's problem.

The world would have us all believe that Christianity is archaic and even anti-woman. They think the feminist world-view that they teach is woman's liberation. When, in fact, it is their anti-femininity thought process that truly restrains us from fulfilling our true destiny as women.

If you are searching for woman's liberation, just open up the Word of God and discover who He says you really are. As you strive to become that woman, you will truly feel liberated.

Equivalent retaliation?
by: Anonymous

When God said it wasn't “good” for Man to be "alone" perhaps he was simply signifying a companionship or for simplicity sake not wanting his child to experience solitude?

When God said he'd make Man a "helper meet" perhaps he signified one who would and will aid man's requests?

Could it be feasible, women focus way too much on the facade rather than the inner creation beneath the surface? Man was created first signifying God’s glorious creation in His image. To gratify yourselves with such a statement saying he created Man without perfection is blasphemy. God created Man with intent to imagine perfection and decided to add a helping companion who would accompany Man on his journey through life. However, everyone would rather give their input giving dominance over that of the other.

An apple complements a pie (not correction, but complementary).

Michael is incorrect
by: Kandace

The Butler Catechism reference is copied and pasted directly below. Contributor Michael is either innocent but needs to READ the Butler Catechism before he quotes it, or he is deliberately misrepresenting it. We can give him the benefit of the doubt that he is just misinformed.

For those who read his comment, please read the direct copy and paste from the Butler Catechism.

"Why did God make the world ?
A. For his own glory, to show his power and
wisdom, and for man s use and benefit. fxQV-. xvi.
4; Ecclus. xvii. 7, 8."

The world, Michael, the world. Not woman. Man is the glory of God, and woman is the glory of man. She is not less than him. She is the finishing touch, absolutely necessary, without which all of creation is deemed "not good" by Elohim. His words, not ours.

I wonder sometimes why god made transgender kids. Why is it that some kids feel the need to be the opposite sex? Does the bible say anything about that?

So....Why Did God Make Woman?
by: Horace Winter/El Paso

A.Lewis,
I read yor article today (01/31/10)
Gen.1:22 Let us make man in our own image. Who is
God talking to? Holy Spirit, his only son (Jesus).
Note: Adam was not God's son.
Matt. 1:13... Immanuel,which means..
Jn. 1:1,14, 3:16,17,18/17:11,22
Note: I do not make things up,I use scripture as my guide.

There was a Billboard in town which said,

"This is a message from God, read your Bible daily, there will be a test."
I have a sermon on this subject, and not one word of what you have said ever entered my thoughts.

We need each other
by: Katherine Harms

I had never thought about the fact that God suddenly changed his tune about "it was good" when he looked at man all by himself. That is an eye-opening observation. Women have value, and not just as housekeepers. Great insight.

Hey Lady
by: Denise Mistich

I didn't know it until now, but this is something I needed to hear.

Oh, and by the way, I've looked at your website and read enough of your words to know that you are more than a lady. You are a daughter of the King of Kings. I guess that makes you a princess.

Excellent point
by: Katherine Harms

The most important thing you said in this article is that when God looked at Adam all by himself in Eden, he said, "It is not good." You vividly brought out that point, which should be the foundation of a woman's humble self-esteem. It was not good for man to be alone, and God made it good after all. The obvious lesson is not that men need women, or that women are props for men. The lesson is that we need each other. Our strengths are complimentary and necessary. What a great thought.

freedom as a woman
by: cgeewriter

I really like this piece. There are so many women throughout the world that need to know that they were no after-thought. God doesn't make mistakes but He also doesn't let us in on the Tapestry of our Lives. He alone sees the finished tapestry planned for each of us while we see the underside with its tangles, knots & confusion.
This sounds like a good beginning for a series, a book, an ezine...
go where God leads!cg
