Unique purpose involving spouse?

by Tanya
(England)

Dear Karen,

Firstly I'd like to thank you for your wonderful website. I have found it very helpful.

I've just read Erin's question about submission and it is something I too struggle with every now and then. Usually when I think my husband has made a mistake and is being hypocritical. I find it hard to submit to him when I think he is wrong, but through prayer I am doing better at this.

My question is based on your comment to Erin; 'What REALLY matters is what God is calling YOU to do. God has a plan that is unique for you.'

What if my purpose has nothing to do with my husband? What I'm saying is, I have a calling to Spain but my husband has a calling to the States. Can this be right? I really do understand God has a plan that is unique to all of us, but what if we're in a partnership or have children that will be affected by our unique plan?

Some Christian friends have said that God wouldn't separate us, but I have read about numerous couples who have ministered apart in separate countries.

I would love to know your thoughts on this.

Blessings
Tanya

Unique purpose involving spouse?
by: Tanya

Hey Karen,

Thanks for your quick reply.

You have confirmed what I feel God is already telling me and you are right, I am a bit of a rebel, which is probably why it took me years to finally accept God into my life.

I discussed with my husband what I wrote to you, which to be honest I believe is borne out of fear of going to America. I am one of those, 'the easy way out' type of people and feel totally freaked that God would send us to America where we have no friends, family, church or any idea of what we will do when we're there.

I recently visited the place in Spain to which I believe God has placed on my heart, and while there, I felt God say it isn't the right time just yet, and that America will the place next Summer.

Sometimes, I allow the flesh to rule the spirit, but like you've suggested, pray, pray and more prayer is what's helping me through this time.

May God continue in your work.

Many blessings
Tanya

The two are one

Hi Tanya,

Depending on the answer you're looking for, you can always find somebody that will agree with you.

I really think you and your husband need to pray fervently to find God's leading in this one. I don't see God arbitrarily splitting up your family.

While it's true that God has a unique purpose for each of you, it is most likely that the purpose will be where you both are rowing the boat in the same direction.

Because you already have issues with submission, are you sure this isn't your way to rebel somehow?

That's not to say that you don't have a calling to minister in Spain. But it may be that it's not time to fulfill that call. It may be that God showed you something that will happen in your future, when both you and your husband are able to go to Spain.

God's purpose doesn't just pertain to a day, a week, a month, or even a year. Sometimes God makes a promise to someone that takes many years to fulfill.

But Tanya, the worst thing you can do is get ahead of God. Look what happened to Moses. Yes, he eventually fulfilled his call, but not before he got ahead of God, killed an Egyptian, and ended up sitting on a shelf in the desert for 40 years before God mobilized him again.

Maybe your purpose for today is to be the best Christian wife and mom that you can be. Maybe God needs to work with you on some areas in your life to prepare you for Spain. Maybe there are many things that God needs to teach you before you're ready.

The best thing you can do is to pray, pray, pray. Ask for God's leading and confirmation. Submit your whole heart to Him. Consider the possibility that God is saying, "Eventually, but not now." I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but I call 'em like I see 'em. :)

Blessings,

Karen
