Have you ever thought about it? What is the Soul? I know I'm supposed to have one, but what is it and how does it work?
I just finished an amazing new book by Dutch Sheets. "Roll Away Your Stone" gives you a lot of answers to questions you may have had for years. Here are just a few:
1. What is the soul and what part of me is included?
2. What's the difference between my soul and my spirit?
3. If I'm a Christian, how come life is still so hard?
4. If the Word says I can overcome strongholds in my life, how come I still have so many of them? How come I don't seem to be making any progress?
5. How come it seems like the harder I try to change, the worse I behave?
6. Even if I do manage to change an area in my life, how come I fall back into old patterns? How could I have let all the positive changes literally come undone?
7. What does my soul have to do with my real, everyday life?
Now those are questions....
First, let me just say that asking these kinds of questions will uncover lots of great information, and you will get the answer to that first question....what is the soul? But once you know some of these answers, you're going to feel a lot more responsibility that you did before.
That's not to be meant to sound like a bad thing, it's just the reality of this journey.
When you ask, "What is the soul?", you are asking about your mind, your will, and your emotions. We all have a spirit, a physical body, and a soul. The spirit is the part that God works through initially. Then comes the hard part. From the spirit God wants us to work with Him to help all that great stuff come through and affect the soul; the mind, the will, and the emotions.
I know from my own experience that it's one thing to hear God give me direction in my spirit, but often times it struggles with my emotions or my will or maybe it doesn't make sense in my mind as I follow my own way. "Rolling Away the Stone" talks about how to get your soul to line up with your spirit. It speaks to the dark souls. The Word describes a spiritual person is one who lives according to his spirit instead of his body or his soul.
When I first read about this concept, it was revelation to me. I never really thought about how it all works and functions together.
This book also talks about strongholds, how they got there, and what it will take to get rid of them. After all, many times it is those strongholds that prevent you from discovering God's plan for your life. Once you understand how the strongholds got there in the first place, you're able to understand your actions a little more clearly.
I think Dutch Sheets offers a wonderful description of what happened in that whole "Adam and Eve eating the wrong apple" episode. He describes it as not only "the fall from God's grace", but an elevation of our own soul, which is simply doing what you want, when you want, without regard to the direction in your spirit. It is a real window into the soul. What a concept.
This book is for people who want to go deeper and who not only want the answer to the initial question...."what is the soul?", but who want to understand and accept responsibility for the knowledge.
