Women's Submission

Hi Karen,
I am a young woman growing in the Christian faith, but I was not raised in the faith so I am struggling with women's role in God's Kingdom. Specifically, the idea of submission to husbands and men in general. I understand that the marriage relationship is a reflection of Christ's relationship with the Father, but I am still struggling with why God chose men to rule over women? It makes me feel that He views women as less- less smart, not as capable, not as strong. I have been through much, and I am far stronger than most men I know. I am not saying this from a pride standpoint, just a statement of fact. I am not, sadly, a delicate flower that needs guided. It makes me not want to get married at all.

Sincerely,
Erin

The Life of Christian Women
by: Karen

Hi Erin,

As strong Christian women, I think we all wonder about our roles at one time or another.

Just because God created man first, that doesn't mean he made women any less than man. In fact, sometimes I think (and this is just my own thought), that God made man first so he could work all the kinks out before he made woman! :)

Strong Christian marriages today are partnerships. Both people in the marriage submit to God AND each other. Yes, the Bible says the man is to lead the household, but it also says that the man is to love his wife so much that he will lay down his life for her. I believe God knew what He was doing when He created the order of things.

Does it mean you're supposed to submit to all men? NO. Does it mean that men are superior to women? NO. What it does mean is that you are supposed to submit to whatever authority God has placed in your life. It could be female or male. God chooses the people in authority in our lives and when we submit to that authority, whether it's at home, at work, or in everyday life, we are submitting to God's purpose.

If you look around in today's world, you'll find strong, Christian women that God is using in powerful ways. My favorite author, Joyce Meyer, is a prime example. She's doing things that are just as powerful and awesome for God's kingdom as any Christian man.

And there are so many others. But Erin, the bottom line is that is doesn't matter whether you're a man or woman. What REALLY matters is what God is calling YOU to do. God has a plan that is unique for you. He knows you're a woman. He knows what he's getting. You are no surprise to God.

Erin, start reading about some of the strongest women in the Bible. Esther and Ruth are a couple of them. Just look how God used Esther to save the whole Israel nation. And they had to work around all the rules about women from those days. Talk about a test.

Just know that as long as you get your strength and confidence from God, the rest will fall into place. As long as you learn how to be led by the Holy Spirit, submitting to whatever authority in your life will get easier and you'll go on to be a strong Christian woman.

Blessings,

Karen
